School of Science

The School of Science brings together three key subject areas; Environmental Sciences, Biomedical and Forensic Science and Psychology. The School has strong links with key external agencies including the University Hospitals for Derby and Burton NHS Trust who support the Biomedical Sciences IBMS provision as well as research collaborations. The School also works with regional forensic science agencies including the police and private forensic science labs as well as numerous environmental agencies locally, nationally and internationally focusing on conservation, habitat management and environmental regeneration.

About the Role

The Psychology subject area is home to the University's Psychology, Ergonomics and Human Factors and Counselling and Psychotherapy provision, with programmes delivered at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. As a TEF Gold institution, we are proud to contribute high quality programmes grounded in psychological and behavioural science with a significant focus on applied psychology and professional practice. We host a large accredited provision across several Professional and Statutory Regulatory Bodies (including the CIEHF, BABCP, BACP, NCPS, BPS and HCPC). Programmes range from undergraduate underpinnings and initial postgraduate training for some psychological professions, to delivery that supports careers in sectors such as marketing, business, management and leadership (and many more). Furthermore we offer training in a range of therapeutic modalities across the counselling and psychotherapy courses and contribute to the development of the wider psychological workforce through our NHS based commissioned programmes. In Psychology our provision is underpinned by excellent student support to achieve the best possible outcomes for our students and high quality progression opportunities into a range of careers. Our delivery is further underpinned by high quality scientific research and scholarly activity, with industry informed and based research informing and leading the development of curriculum to ensure programmes are meeting the needs of employers to foster the success of our graduates from across the subject. 

We are excited to be able to advertise this role for a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Ergonomics and Human Factors. We are looking for someone to join our ergonomics team to support the delivery of our ergonomics provision. The role holder will contribute to the academic leadership and delivery of modules on our MSc Ergonomics and Human Factors (with pathways), support supervision of student research projects and and to the research profile of the Psychology Subject area, including applied Ergonomics and Human Factors research.

As we develop and grow our ergonomics and human factors provision, this role will include oversight, leadership and development of our online programmes, working with the Subject lead, senior academics and the wider teaching team to ensure continuation of excellent student experience and outcomes. There are also opportunities to contribute to the psychology provision and other areas that align with your area of expertise. We are passionate about inspiring and empowering our graduates in their future careers in a range of destinations, within industry, academia or other progression routes. The role will include leading and supporting our marketing events (e.g., open days) which occasionally take place into evenings and at weekends.

The Psychology subject area has an active research agenda, and you will be expected to engage with and support financially sustainable research and/or other appropriate academic activity. Our provision spans campus and online delivery there will be opportunity for working from home as agreed with the Subject Lead. We do support hybrid working as business needs permit. There is currently no requirement for line management in this role. 

This is a part time position (0.6 FTE) which may be attractive to candidates who wish to continue practice based work and develop their academic practice alongside this.

About You

We are seeking a lecturer or senior lecturer in Ergonomics and Human Factors who holds (or is willing to gain) Chartered or Technical membership of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF) to join our team delivering programmes in ergonomics. We would welcome applications from candidates with experience of teaching / training and leadership, and experience of relevant transferable skills in these areas from beyond higher education (e.g., industry based experience). The candidate should also have experience of undertaking research, and be passionate about supporting the development and growth of evidence in their field. Excellence in communication, team and collaborative working are essential, both internally and externally.

About the Role

Engineering at Derby is driving forward an ambitious vision to create an exceptional learning environment, expand our research excellence, and strengthen industry collaboration across the region and beyond. As part of this strategic growth, we seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable individual to join our team as a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Along with your research work, this role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growth and success of our Electrical and Electronic Engineering programmes. You will need to engage with employers on your teaching to ensure it is aligned with the sector expectations. The typical teaching timetable runs 09:00 – 17:00, with some evenings and weekend, work with most of the scheduled teaching currently at Markeaton Street campus.

About the Role

The successful candidate will join the teaching team delivering teaching, facilitating learning and engaging in the assessment processes across a range of modules/ subject areas on the undergraduate, postgraduate, professional and post-experience programmes. They will engage with the universities quality monitoring policies and procedures related to module and programme delivery, as well as undertaking wider duties such as personal academic tutoring, timetabling, marketing, admissions and student recruitment, open days and graduation events.

The anticipated interview date is Tuesday 7^th July 2026.

From the 1^st August this role will sit within the School of Health, Sport and Rehabilitation.

About You

The ideal candidate will be a professionally registered Occupational Therapist with HCPC registration and proven experience within occupational therapy practice. You will demonstrate a genuine appetite for supporting student learning and development, alongside the ability to communicate complex and conceptual ideas clearly to a wide range of audiences. You will be committed to delivering an outstanding student experience through continual enhancement, innovation, and high-quality teaching and support.

About the discipline of Midwifery, Children’s Nursing and Professional Practice 

The discipline of Midwifery, Children’s Nursing and Professional Practice at the University of Derby is dedicated to educating the next generation of midwives, children’s nurses, and healthcare educators who will support families and young people with empathy, clinical excellence, and confidence.

We are looking for an inspiring Lecturer in Children’s Nursing to deliver high‑quality teaching across our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. This role is a fixed term contract for 24 months.

About You

You will be a registered Children’s Nurse with the NMC, holding a relevant honours degree and ideally a PhD or equivalent professional achievement, or a commitment to work towards this. You will bring strong subject knowledge in children’s nursing and an enthusiasm for teaching, with experience or understanding of higher education and the ability to engage students through varied and effective delivery methods.

About the Role

The purpose of this role is to support the delivery of a research project funded by the British Academy by assisting with key research activities. The Research Assistant will contribute to literature reviews, data collection and management, and qualitative and/or quantitative data analysis. Core duties include supporting the preparation of research outputs such as reports and publications, maintaining accurate research records, assisting with ethical and administrative requirements, and collaborating with the research team to ensure the project is completed on time and to a high academic standard.

The anticipated interview date is Thursday 18th June 2026.

About You

We are seeking a detail-oriented Research Assistant to support a project funded by the British Academy. The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience in academic research, including conducting literature reviews, collecting and managing qualitative and/or quantitative data, and supporting data analysis. You should possess strong organisational and communication skills, with the ability to contribute to research outputs such as reports, publications, and presentations. Experience with research software such as SPSS, R, Stata, or qualitative analysis tools like NVivo is desirable. The role also requires the ability to work collaboratively within a research team while managing tasks independently and meeting project deadlines.
